These designs were inspired by a Facebook ban I received for posting an image with the words "shoot the police" underneath. Obviously the algorithm cannot understand context. Or indeed that anything might have more than one meaning? FFS.
Anyway, the ban was worth it, for some inspiration to cut some lino blocks. Haven't done this for ages. Messy, isn't it? And some hand printing, which is hugely enjoyable. These badges and stickers came from the resulting prints.
Intended both as a homage to Woody Guthrie, and to all the journalists who have ever taken a photograph or shot footage in order to share the truth with the world. Especially those in war zones, and to those who've lost their lives in the name of journalism. In a post truth age, where anyone with a smart phone, or access to a device connected to AI, is a "journalist". Not just the so-called far-right "auditors", all across the political spectrum. User generated discontent for the masses. With no regard for the truth or the noble art of journalism.
I'm no luddite, but I wanted to use very analogue devices. In particular I was imagining John Pilger crawling through a jungle filming on a hand held super 8 camera. Turns out he never filmed any of his amazing documentaries on super 8. But if I told you he had, would you have believed me? Rest in Power, John.
